NEWS: Kate Kroker becomes new facilitator

Sylvia Menninga, chief facilitator and a founding member of PFLAG Oak Park, is stepping down in her role as a convener of the group. The baton is being passed to another longterm member, Kate Kroker.

Menninga says she is proud of the work she's done and all that's been accomplished by the group in the four years she has served as facilitator, including successful lobbying of the Illinois legislature for statewide gay rights legislation, and the creation of a continuing education course on GLBT sensitivity issues for local school teachers.

Kroker has said her plans for the group do not include major changes. "But, I would like to add new members, increase our advocacy efforts and do more outreach to minorities, particularly African Americans," she says.

In the short term, she is working on plans for sponsoring a local showing of "Love Makes a Family," a special exhibit of photographs with commentary that the group plans for fall 2006. The venue and time have yet to be determined.
