NEWS: Countdown until Love Makes a Family opens

PFLAG Oak Park is proud to be sponsoring is a remarkable photographic exhibit, Love Makes a Family, which opens in Oak Park starting with a reception at Unity Temple on September 29. The show continues through Oct. 8 at Unity Temple, after which it moves to Oak Park River Forest High School, closing on Oct. 13.

Love Makes a Family is a touring photo exhibit with commentary created by the award-winning Family Diversity Projects of Amherst, Massachusetts. Photographs by Gigi Kaeser depict a variety of LGBT people and their families of all races in familiar family settings. The photos are accompanied by text edited by Peggy Gillespie from in-depth interviews she conducted with each family member – including children – who speak candidly about their lives, their relationships, and the ways in which they cope with the realities of prejudice, bias, and intolerance on a day-to-day basis.

Following the reception on September 29 will be a performance by the About Face Youth Theatre consisting of excerpts from their current production, The Home Project. Based on interviews with hundreds of LGBT youth about their experiences with home and homelessness, these young LGBT actors perform these stories of young people’s struggles while battling complacency, violence and apathy.
